Citizens with low incomes, pensioners and those on economic assistance will be able to buy wood for heating at half the price.

The initiative was undertaken by the Municipality of Elbasan, which this year has decided to manage them by itself, helping the most needy citizens.

The General Secretary of the SP Damian Gjiknuri, who is also the political leader of the district, together with the Mayor Gledian Llatja, were in the city's Wood Field, where all measures have been taken to cope with the winter.

Gjiknuri appreciated this policy followed by the Municipality of Elbasan that comes to the aid of families in need. "It is a real social policy. So a natural resource that the Municipality of Elbasan has, such as the forest assets that Elbasan has, is used by the Municipality itself, not by the private sector and this should be emphasized, coming to the aid of the citizens. There is no need to comment on the energy situation, the increase in the price of energy and the lack of energy in the market, especially in Albania due to the drought, have already become a worldwide problem. This will ensure that families are not affected by the use of energy consumption, but return to firewood sold or offered by the Municipality at a minimal price", he declared.

The political leader of the SP for the Elbasan district underlined that the goal is not to return to wood as an alternative form of heating, but to help the citizens in a difficult energy period. :" It is the citizens of the city of Elbasan who have low incomes, who are lonely retirees, who are on economic assistance and who are the most needy people who will benefit from this offer and incentive of the Municipality. It is not the intention to go to firewood as an alternative form of heating, but in these extreme needs that we are in conditions where the lack of energy is great, in conditions where the population is called to save, this alternative form is a very good for the time being. I think that the Municipality of Elbasan is a pioneer in this direction", said Gjiknuri.

The General Secretary of the SP clarified that the wood material that will be used for heating is provided by cuttings necessary for the maintenance of the forests, having previously received the approval of the experts. "This wood is not cut for profit purposes, but it is a wood that also serves for the maintenance of the forest. They are necessary cuts. They used to be private, they took out the profits. The Municipality already does it and offers it to the most needy citizens. That's why I wanted to emphasize the social-community aspect, the public good must prevail everywhere", stated Damian Gjiknuri.

The mayor of Elbasan, Gledian Llatja, declared that about 2000 needy families will benefit from this decision. "If previously the woods or forest plots were given by concession or other forms, the Municipality of Elbasan has chosen to keep and treat them by itself for the benefit of the citizens. Every family in need will receive firewood at nearly half the market value this year. Even the confiscated wood that was cut illegally will go to the service of the citizens", emphasized the mayor Llatja.
