The elections in the Municipality of Himara ended with the victory of the candidate of the "Together We Win" coalition, Fredi Beleri, over the candidate of the Socialist Party, Gjergji Goro, with a margin of 19 votes.

Mr. Beleri is in prison on charges of "buying votes", but this does not legally prevent the Central Election Commission from giving him the mandate.

Supporters of the "Together We Win" coalition candidate celebrated the victory of Fredi Beleri in Himare, who is in custody in Tirana, arrested two days before the elections on the charge of vote buying.

From the results of Sunday's voting, Mr. Beleri has emerged as the winner with only 19 votes difference from his rival Gjergji Goro, who represented the Socialist Party.

The counting process has been tense at times due to the close result and the winner has been determined in the last two boxes.

Chosen by the Human Rights Party, a political force that mainly represents the Greek minority in Albania, Beleri was supported by the "Together We Win" Coalition.

The President of the Human Rights Party, Vangjel Dule, told journalists in Himara today: "It is a new page for Himara and I insist that the Municipality of Himara, representing everyone without exception, will be a new model. I guarantee you that regardless of the election results today, here in Himara the autocracy of Rama was broken".

A day ago, the candidate of the socialists, Jorgo Goro, said immediately after his vote in Himara that there was calm in the voting centers and people were expressing their will freely.

"Citizens of Himara must express their will by voting and the vote must be for what the citizens think. They are voting today freely and in the polling stations, as you can see, there is calm", he declared.

After the announcement of the result for the Municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri, through a post on Facebook, said that he called it a victory of democracy and thanked his supporters for the courage they showed.

"In Himara there are no losers and winners, writes Beleri, but there is a victory of democracy and citizens".

The Greek Foreign Ministry said that "the arrest of a candidate for mayor two days before the elections did not speak for the rule of law in Albania. The official Athens said that "The decision to ban the candidate for mayor brings a complete change of the rules of equality in the municipal elections in Himarë".

While in response to Athens' statements, the Albanian Foreign Minister, Olta Xhaçka, said that "Fredi Beleri has been caught engaging in criminal activity against free and fair elections".

"It is almost impossible to understand how our Greek friends have the right to oppose a court decision in our country, when the strong evidence they were looking for is very clear," stressed Ms. Xhaçka./VOA
