Statements on Ambassador Gonzato, SP demands Berisha's expulsion from
Silvio Gonzato, Sali Berisha

The Socialist Party (SP) is demanding the punishment of Sali Berisha for the attacks the day before against EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato regarding the gender equality law. In the request addressed to the Secretariat of Ethics, the Socialists are demanding that the democratic leader be excluded from the proceedings of the Assembly for up to 10, 30 or 60 days.

The SP argues that Berisha's statements were insulting, denigrating and discriminatory towards the European diplomat, violating not only his personal dignity but also the image of the Assembly institution. This action, the SP says, constitutes a serious breach of ethics and a direct violation of the principles of MP conduct as set out in the Code of Conduct and the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly.

"We request that disciplinary action be taken against MP Sali Berisha, according to the provisions of Article 65/1, Exclusion from participation in committees and/or plenary sessions for up to 10 days, 30 days or 60 days," the request states.

Berisha said inside and outside the Parliament that Gonzato could not impose his personal beliefs on Albanian society. His statement also brought the reaction of the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, who said that the alignment of Albania's legislature with these EU principles is part of the accession process to the Union. It was followed by the reaction of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who apologized for the behavior of his opponent and the use of the ambassador's name for a low purpose.

Even after these reactions, Berisha did not back down and declared again inside the Parliament that he had not made any insult. The much-discussed draft law was approved last night with 77 votes in favor of the majority. 36 opposition MPs voted against.
