For Fredi Beleri, the engagement in Greek politics and the election as an MEP of the European Parliament was to highlight the problems of Albanian justice. This is what Fredi Beleri said in a telephone interview from prison for the international news agency Associated Press.
"I had no intention of entering Greek politics, it was because of the need to highlight this big problem. Anyone who knows me knows for sure that I would prefer to be mayor", said Fredi Beleri, elected mayor and MEP.
Fredi Beleri received a sentence of two years in prison from the Court of Appeal of Tirana, but for him, the judiciary is only an extended wing of politics.
"I know that my election will help put the spotlight on a major problem facing Albania, which is the rule of law. Here the judiciary is the long arm of politics. I think these problems should be highlighted, the lack of respect for the rights of the Greek ethnic minority, such as the right to property and to be governed by the people he chooses," he added.
Beleri, quoted by the Associated Press, denies the charges, claiming that Rama targeted him to maintain control of Himara and that the judges ignored the evidence in his favor. Albanian officials strongly reject his claims, citing the independence of the judiciary. For his part, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has informed the European People's Parties about the Beleri case, but not the European Union.
"We discussed the Beleri issue at the meeting of the European People's Party and we did this because the president of the European Parliament, Mrs. Metsola. Look, I take it for granted that Fredi Beleri will be in Strasbourg to officially take up his duties as an MEP and will undoubtedly take part in the extremely crucial vote for the election of the next President of the European Commission. I will not say anything more, but I think it is completely reasonable and self-evident that this should happen", said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece.
Beler's sentence ends in mid-October. Barring an early release, he will not join the 704 other lawmakers in the European parliament for its first session on July 16.
