British Ambassador to Albania, Alastair King-Smith

The British ambassador to Albania, Alastair King-Smith, has spoken about the local elections of May 14 in our country.

He said in the show "Open" that in an electoral campaign, it is important that there is a debate between the candidates of the parties, as this counts a lot and tells the citizens more about their program.

Alastair King-Smith stressed the need for citizens not to be pressured and to vote freely.

"I think that these elections are very important because we haven't tested local elections for a long time. There will also be national elections in two years, and we see that these elections are important within the democratic process. We see progress in terms of the quality of elections, how political parties behave. But there needs to be more focus on people feeling they can vote freely.

I believe that in any democratic country, it is important to focus on politics and what politics will give to the people. We must have clean, non-corrupt and criminal-free candidates. We have seen progress, but more needs to be done so that campaigns are open and reflect interests.

In the UK, where there is more attention and experience in elections, we hold debates between the candidates, and I believe it is healthy and when it is possible to face each other it can bring value. Here they chose not to do it, but in a democracy it is important that citizens hold them accountable.

I believe that our position on the definitions is clear. Those involved in corruption must be held accountable. Those associated with corruption and criminality should play less or no role in politics," he declared.
