They did not use them to fly, but to communicate

The dinosaur's winged relative, the pterosaur, had feathers and could control their color, just like birds today.

To solve what has remained a mystery for many years is the research conducted on the fossil of a pterosaur discovered in Brazil and dated 115 million years ago.

The discovery, published in the journal Nature, is due to research coordinated by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and shows that colored feathers were already used as a kind of language for visual communication.

The fossil found belongs to the species Tupandactylus Imperator, a pterosaur famous for its visible and strange crest.

The researchers, led by Aude Cincotta, discovered, at the base of the ridge, the presence of a feather border, some of which had the classic branching structure typical of those of birds.

"It was completely unexpected, for decades paleontologists have debated whether or not there are feathers in pterosaurs," said Cincotta.

"Our discovery now finally closes the debate," she added.
