Surprising discovery! For the first time a plant grows in soil taken from the Moon

Scientists have grown plants in soil taken from the Moon for the first time, an important step to make long-term stay on the Moon possible, reports the BBC.

The researchers used small dust samples collected during the 1969-1972 Apollo missions to grow a type of plant.

To their surprise, the seeds germinate after two days.

"I can not tell you how surprised we were," said Anna-Lisa Paul, a University of Florida professor who co-authored the study.

The plants, whether those planted in a lunar sample or those planted under normal soil conditions, looked the same until about the sixth day.

After that, differences emerged. Plants grown on lunar soil began to grow more slowly and ended up withering.

"This study is important for the long-term goals of NASA exploration, as we will have to use the resources found on the Moon and Mars to develop food sources for future astronauts living and operating in space," he said. NASA, Bill Nelson.

NASA plans to send humans to the Moon for the first time since 1972 on a mission planned in 2025.
