Phoebe Gates, the 22-year-old daughter of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has inadvertently revealed a detail about her father's health.

During an interview on the popular podcast Call Her Daddy, hosted by Alex Cooper, she casually mentioned that Gates has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder.

"My dad is pretty socially awkward. He said he has Asperger's," she said simply during the conversation, while sharing what it's like to bring your boyfriend home to introduce him to one of the most famous and talked-about figures in the world.

This statement immediately raised doubts and debate on social media, as Bill Gates himself has never publicly confirmed such a diagnosis.

However, in his memoirs from 2023, Gates mentioned that if he had grown up today, he would most likely have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

He has reported difficulties in social interaction in childhood and tendencies to obsess over certain topics, behaviors closely associated with Asperger's.

Phoebe added on the podcast that her father's behavior often makes the person she introduces to the house feel uncomfortable.

She recalled a particular moment when Gates drove them to a school dance, a situation she described as "very awkward, but also funny."

So far, Bill Gates has not publicly responded to his daughter's comments, but her story has sparked great public interest and widespread discussion about the diagnosis and prevalence of autism spectrum disorders in well-known personalities.

What is Asperger's syndrome?

Children with Asperger's syndrome or High Functioning Autism perceive the world differently. They often believe that everything moves at a strange pace.

Asperger's syndrome was named after the Austrian physician Hans Asperger. In 1944, Asperger's syndrome was observed in a group of children and adolescents who, despite having many impressive characteristics, such as a high level of independent thinking and a capacity for extraordinary achievement, had difficulty responding socially and displayed difficulties in the social use of language, as well as often repetitive behaviors – stereotypies and obsessions with specific objects.

The syndrome was ignored by experts for years, and it was only in 1981 that Lorna Wing, in an article, presented children with similar characteristics, creating a new field of research that subsequently expanded significantly.

Typically, children with Asperger syndrome have average or high intelligence, while some of them have special talents. These children and adults display some symptoms of autism, but without delays in their speech and cognitive development. This specific symptomatology falls into the category of developmental disorders, has a neurobiological etiology and is found more often in boys.

Asperger's syndrome has been included in the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) since 1992 and in the corresponding classification in the American Psychiatric Association's DSM.

In 2013, the 5th edition of the DSM introduced significant changes to the diagnostic criteria for autism, and thus, today the general term Autism Spectrum Disorder is used.
