Denzel Washington has become a priest after being baptized before his 70th birthday during a religious ceremony in New York.
The "Gladiator II" star was baptized Saturday at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem. The service was streamed on Facebook and featured the actor wearing a white robe, being immersed in a baptismal font and being presented with a certificate.
While mentioning that he turns 70 on December 28, Washington said: "It took a while, but I'm here."
He spoke of an event when, at the age of 20, he met a woman in his mother's salon, named Ruth Green, who said to him, "Boy, you're going to travel the world and speak to millions of people."
He was also granted a license from the church that will allow him to lead small religious services such as weddings and may be ordained in the future.

In a November interview with Esquire, Washington described the moment of his spiritual awakening that occurred around the 1980s in a church in Los Angeles.
"I felt like I was being lifted up into the air. I felt like my back was arched and my eyes were closed. Not that I was being lifted up into the air, but I can't describe it. And I was speaking because I was being filled with the Holy Spirit."
In the same interview, the actor also spoke about the difficulties faced in Hollywood if you are open about your faith. "It's not talked about. It's not fashionable. It's not sexy. But that doesn't mean that those in Hollywood don't believe."
