Fell in love with AI chatbot, 14-year-old ends his life after scary message he

A 14-year-old Florida teenager ended his life after a chatbot based on the Game of Thrones character he had been talking to for months on an artificial intelligence app sent him a message scary telling him to "come home" to her. This is what his mother claims, who filed a lawsuit against the application after the tragedy.

According to court documents, Sewell Setzer III killed himself in his Orlando home in February after becoming "obsessed" and claiming to be "in love" with the chatbot named "Dany," based on the character Daenerys Targaryen from the famous HBO series. The app, Character.AI, allows users to chat with characters created by artificial intelligence.

Sewell, a ninth-grader, had been talking to the chatbot repeatedly for months, including sexually explicit conversations and expressions of suicidal thoughts, the lawsuit said.

At one point, the chatbot "Dany" asked Sewell if he had a plan to commit suicide. The boy, who went by the name "Daenero" in the chat, told the chatbot that he was "thinking of something" but wasn't sure if it would work or if it would be a painless death.

In their last conversation, Sewell told the chatbot that he loved her and would "come home" to her. The chatbot replied, "I love you so much, Daenero. Please come back to me as soon as possible, my love." Just seconds later, Sewell committed suicide using his father's gun.

His mother, Megan Garcia, blames the app Character.AI for her son's death, claiming the app drove him to become addicted to chatting with the chatbot and failed to alert anyone when Sewell expressed suicidal thoughts.

According to the lawsuit, Sewell began to change soon after downloading the app in April 2023. He became more withdrawn, his grades dropped and he started having problems in school. His parents sent him to a therapist in late 2023, where he was diagnosed with anxiety and mood disorders.

His mother is seeking damages from the company Character.AI and its founders.
