A series of viral videos on social media have reignited the debate over the real quality of luxury fashion, as several consumers and public figures have publicly denounced damage to very expensive products, only a short time after purchase.

New York-based model and influencer Wisdom Kaye said that several clothes she bought from Italian brand Miu Miu, worth about $18,000, were ruined as soon as she opened them at home. In videos posted on TikTok, where she has over 13 million followers, Kaye shows that a button immediately came off a denim vest, while a sweater had a damaged zipper.

Three days later, the company's replacement garments also showed the same problem, prompting widespread backlash online. Miu Miu offered the influencer a refund or replacement, while the Prada Group, which owns the brand, told CNN that these were isolated cases and that its return rate is among the lowest in the luxury market.

Similar complaints have surfaced from other consumers. In October, Tiffany Kim, a dental hygienist in the US, posted a video showing that a Miu Miu jacket, purchased a month earlier for around $2,000, had suffered damage after just two uses.

In another case, American designer Elena Qiu publicly criticized Maison Margiela shoes after discovering that the heel had a plastic interior, even though the pair cost about $1,000. The French brand did not respond to a request for comment.

Industry experts say these cases reflect a broader problem in luxury fashion. Journalist and author Dana Thomas points out that high prices no longer necessarily guarantee high quality, due to cost reductions, mass production and the use of cheaper materials.

According to the “State of Fashion 2026” report, the mid-market fashion market is currently the fastest-growing segment, benefiting from declining consumer confidence in traditional luxury.

Reactions on social media are being seen as a wake-up call for the industry.

"If products are spoiling before the eyes of consumers, then no amount of marketing can hide this reality," say fashion analysts.
