Russia replaces McDonald's and steals logo

A Russian restaurant chain conceived as a replacement for McDonald's that left after sanctions is reported to have discovered a logo that is extremely similar to the fast food giant's famous gold arches.

A trademark registration for the "Uncle Vanya" franchise was deposited last week with Russian authorities, according to media reports.

McDonald's last week said it would temporarily close all 847 of its restaurants in Russia as global brands face pressure from consumers to oppose Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

The new logo of "Uncle Vanya" appears to be modeled after the Cyrillic "B", which in the Latin alphabet refers to "V" and social media users rushed to point out its resemblance to McDonald's brand.

Moscow's mayor said local chains could replace the 250 McDonald's restaurants in the Russian capital within a year. The city council said it had given 500m rubles (5m euros) to local fast food chains.
