Robert De Niro: Death? It doesn't scare me

Death? I have no other choice, so I better not be afraid of it, says Robert De Niro at the meeting with hundreds of students, cinematographers and journalists at the Cannes Film Festival.

The applause when the honorary winner of the Palme d'Or, who did not mince words about Trump and all fascist regimes that fight art, enters the "Debussy" hall is endless.

Everyone on their feet for three very long minutes.

A film legend that is not easy to break.

"Keep asking me questions, let's keep asking until I end up in a coffin," is De Niro's sarcastic comment.

A young journalist from Georgia talks about friends imprisoned for no reason and asks how to change course.

"People should stand up for what's right, because they know inherently what's right, and we know that some people are doing what's wrong. People should have the right to make decisions collectively," De Niro responds.

Then he only talks about cinema.

"I went there every Saturday, sometimes with my father. We liked it, it was a way to be together without talking. I always wished that films were shown in cinemas because there is a difference between living an experience in the theatre and living it alone. Theatre is family," he emphasizes.

De Niro is also asked for his sources of inspiration.

"They are my generation: Marlon Brando with the film 'On the Waterfront', James Dean, Montgomery Clift, Laurence Olivier, John Ford's westerns. The first film I saw in my life was 'Beauty and the Beast' by Jean Cocteau," he says.

"I am not afraid of death, but the time I have left is precious, to learn to embrace life, to move forward and to accept everything, for better or worse," concludes the 81-year-old cinema star.
