NASA announced on Tuesday that it will delay its first landing of astronauts on the moon until 2026, saying that safety is a "top priority".

The space agency said in its statement that in 2025 it aims to undertake its Artemis II mission, which involves sending 4 astronauts on a trip around the Moon, and in 2026 the Artemis III mission, which is planned to land the first astronauts near the Pole of the lunar south marking the first return of astronauts to the lunar surface in more than 50 years.

"We're returning to the Moon in a way we've never done before, and the safety of our astronauts is NASA's top priority as we prepare for future Artemis missions," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in the statement.

The changes to the plans come shortly after the failure and problems with the Peregrine lander, the first by a private company.

For postponing the mission, NASA officials cited "crew safety" concerns, including the spacecraft's batteries and electrical system and next-generation spacesuits.
