The tragic and mysterious disappearance of pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart while flying over the Pacific Ocean has stunned the world for nearly 87 years, prompting countless investigations and expeditions to find answers to what happened to the beloved pilot.

Deep Sea Vision, an exploration team from South Carolina in the United States, claims to have identified the remains of the most famous plane in American aviation history, the one in which Amelia Earhart, along with Fred Noonan and 10 passengers suddenly disappeared on July 2, 1937.

Deep Sea Vision used an underwater drone to search more than 5,200 square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean from September to December 2023 until, on January 27, the exploration team shared sonar images on Instagram of what “appears to be a Lockheed 10- Electra and Earhart.

A sunken wreck at a depth of almost 5,000 meters and located less than 160 kilometers from Howland Island, between Australia and Hawaii, the very island that Amelia and Noonan were trying to reach to refuel.

"Some people call it one of the greatest mysteries of all time, I think it's actually the greatest mystery of all time," said company CEO Tony Romeo, a pilot and former U.S. intelligence officer. US Air Force. "We have an opportunity to close one of the greatest American stories ever."

He said he is looking for new images to prove for sure that this wreckage actually belongs to Amelia Earhart.

There have been many attempts to unravel the mystery of her disappearance, starting with the search at the time, which lasted nearly two years, after which she was declared dead.

In the following years, many other hypotheses, even surreal ones, but the most popular were that the plane had crashed into the sea while Earhart and Noolan were trying to get to Howland Island in search of fuel; or, that they had attempted to land on another nearer island, where they afterwards died.
