Vanilla

Raised in a biomedical research laboratory in New York, a chimpanzee named Vanilla spent her early life peering through the bars of a small birdcage.

Vanilla tasted freedom in 1995, when she was transferred to the Wildlife Waystation along with 30 other chimpanzees.

However, it was later closed, leaving her and her family's future uncertain. Fortunately, Save the Chimps stepped in, giving Vanilla a final forever home.

Vanilla is now 28 years old, and for most of those years she couldn't see the sky from her habitats – she lived exclusively in fenced cages, inside buildings. Everything changed when she arrived at her new home. When she first came out of the enclosure she was a little puzzled, until she looked up.

When she saw the open sky for the first time, Vanilla was "amazed".

She kept looking up as she wandered around and must have felt so happy to finally be free.

Now Vanilla spends as much time as possible outside watching the sky with her family. He loves his new home very much and reminds us all to never take the simple things for granted, like being able to see the sky.
