Australian actor Julian McMahon, known for his roles in popular series such as Nip/Tuck and Charmed, has died at the age of 56.

His wife said the actor died in Clearwater, Florida, on Wednesday, but the news was made public on Saturday. He had been diagnosed with cancer for some time.

"Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work and his fans. His greatest desire was to bring joy to as many lives as possible," Kelly Paniagua said in a released statement.

McMahon's career took off with the science fiction television series 'Charmed', before gaining fame with the medical drama 'Nip/Tuck', where he played the role of plastic surgeon, Dr. Christian Troy.

The series, which aired for six seasons from 2003 to 2010, earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination.

McMahon also played Doctor Doom in two 'Fantastic Four' films in 2005 and 2007, and later appeared in three seasons of the TV series 'FBI: Most Wanted.' The show's producer, Dick Wolf, called his death shocking news.

Julian's last public appearance was last March, when he stood alongside Nicolas Cage in Austin, Texas, promoting the psychological thriller The Surfer, and where he looked quite frail.

His personal life has always been in the spotlight, as he married actress and model Brooke Burns (1999–2001), with whom he had a daughter, Madison Elizabeth McMahon, as well as singer Dannii Minogue.
