The famous French singer and actress Jane Birkin has passed away at the age of 76, foreign media report.

The Anglo-French artist, who inspired the famous collection of Hermès Birkin bags, was found dead in her apartment.

The singer had to postpone a series of concerts this summer after an incident where she broke her shoulder. In 2021, she had postponed another musical tour, because she had a heart attack.

Born in London, Birkin began her career as an actress, and gained international fame for her on- and off-screen relationship with Serge Gainsbourg.

The pair met while co-starring in the 1969 French satirical romantic comedy Slogan, and went on to release a debut album the same year.

The album featured the sexually explicit single "Je t'aime...moi non plus" which reached number one in the UK.

After their split in 1980, Birkin continued to work, appearing in many films and recording numerous solo albums.

In 1981, the actress was next to Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London, according to L'Officiel magazine.

After a conversation between the two about how difficult it was to find a bag that could meet Birkin's needs as a mother of two, the Birkin bag was born.

According to reports, Dumas sketched the bag on the fly and named it the Birkin when production began.
