Inter Miami striker and former Barça player Luis Suarez and his wife Sofía Balbi participated in the rescue of a man who was threatening suicide in Ciudad de la Costa, Canelones, Uruguay.
As Marca reports, the incident took place on Friday evening, when a 49-year-old man climbed a 6-meter tree, claiming he would end his life if his partner did not appear. The incident, which lasted almost 20 hours, mobilized the police and other local authorities.
The man, who was subject to a restraining order for domestic violence, was unarmed but had a rope tied around his neck. During this episode, Luis Suarez and his wife, who were walking near their home in Solymar, went there.
In collaboration with a non-governmental organization specializing in social psychology, Suarez spoke to the individual in an attempt to calm him down. A member of the NGO highlighted the player's empathetic and approachable attitude, which helped calm the situation.
After hours of discussions, the man finally agreed to come down from the tree at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. He was then entrusted to the specialized Domestic Violence Unit of the Ministry of the Interior, where he will be cared for by professionals.
