There are some golden rules to follow when looking for a new job: check your CV for possible spelling mistakes, contact the right company in your cover letter, and be on time for all interviews .

However, some mistakes are less obvious and more difficult to avoid - but such mistakes can make the difference between offering a job and refusing it.

Lauren Gardner, head of human resources at Microsoft, understands these mistakes very well. She has evaluated thousands of candidates for various job positions in her 31 years of experience at the tech giant. Gardner tells CNBC Make It that jobseekers tend to make a big mistake when looking for a job.

According to Gardner, the worst thing a candidate can do is use "general applications." "People usually send thousands of CVs and hope one of them is successful," she explains.

"I would not recommend doing just one or two applications, but when you do a lot of them, people will start to doubt what you are really passionate about."

Instead, Gardner recommends narrowing down your search for a job, starting with a list of 10-15 companies you are interested in, and then expanding your search if you are not getting the results you expected .

"You have to make sure you show a sincere interest in some companies," she adds.

It is also important to be as concise as possible and to fit your CV on one page. "People often send out overly long CVs, but no one has time to review all that information," says Gardner.

Your CV should be viewed in this light: If you were to have someone's attention for 30 seconds, what would you like them to know about you?

"I've seen some fantastic CVs where people not only show off their skills and experiences, but include a short section with their 'interests', highlighting their hobbies and passions, and reading the whole CV takes no more. than a minute, ”says Gardner.

"This is all the time people have available to review your application - so you need to write things that are most unique to you, as concisely as possible."

Gardner recommends a similar approach by narrowing the search circle to other aspects of this process. "There is no need to write hundreds of cover letters - as you will drive yourself crazy," she says.

It is a good idea to have a basic cover letter structure for the job application and to tailor the details for each company or position you are applying for.

"We know the market is dynamic and people are applying to many different companies," says Gardner. "But why are you applying to our company and what do you think is the most interesting thing about working here?" / CNBC
