A Japanese man spent more than two decades living in extreme conditions to achieve financial freedom, but a sharp depreciation of the yen shattered his dream. His story has gone viral in Asia, sparking debate about the cost of living an extremely frugal life.

At the age of 25, he started working for a stable company with grueling hours. With around 29,000 euros a year, he decided to save every penny, living in a company room for just 175 euros a month, without heat or air conditioning, and eating minimal dinners – often just pickles, rice and salted vegetables.

For 20 years and 10 months, he lived with the idea: "I will definitely retire from work," devoting himself only to savings. In January 2025, he reached the goal: 135 million yen, approximately 785 thousand euros.

But the joy was short-lived. In the middle of the year, the yen suffered a sharp decline, significantly reducing the value of savings. “Why have I worked all these years? It’s useless, it’s tragic,” he wrote.

Today, at the age of 45, he lives more comfortably than before, but with uncertainty about the future. He doesn't want to go back to work, but he can't go back to his old lifestyle either.

Experts see his story as a warning about the dangers of extreme savings without investment diversification. He himself admits: “I don’t regret the goal, but the fact that I didn’t enjoy the journey to it.”
