A Turkish court in Istanbul sentenced a rapper to four years in prison on a charge that through texts of his songs promoted hashish consumption.
The convicted singer is Murda, whose real name is Mehmet Önder Doğan, who lives in the Netherlands, but who has most of the songs in Turkish and is well known in his homeland.
Murda denied the charges and said he would appeal the decision through his lawyer in Istanbul.
The lawyer said his client acted "within the norms of freedom of expression".
The charges refer to the singer's three songs, one titled "Eh Baba" which has over 116 million views on YouTube. "I wrapped a cigarette, it stuns me," it says in one of his song texts.
