Hong Kong falls from the "throne" of life expectancy, but who ranks

Hong Kong residents can no longer boast the world's longest life expectancy, handing over the crown to Japan, as COVID-19 and general stress weigh down local life expectancy.

Women in Hong Kong were expected to live an average of 86.8 years in 2022, compared to 87.1 for their Japanese counterparts, according to the latest statistics released this week. Data for 2023 have not yet been published.

Life expectancy for men in the Asian financial center was 80.7 years, the same as in Singapore, but shorter than Sweden, Japan and Norway.

For years, Hong Kong has consistently topped global life expectancy surveys since overtaking Japan in the early 2000s. But residents are becoming increasingly stressed, with physical and mental health deteriorating in recent years amid turmoil social and pandemic.

In a recent survey by insurance provider Cigna Group, Hong Kong residents reported the lowest levels of physical, mental, social and occupational well-being among 12 markets, including the US, UK, mainland China and Singapore. The main stressors in the city included the high cost of living and uncertainty about the future.

The city's death rate from COVID-19 was at one point the highest in the world. The elderly were particularly hard hit by the pandemic, in part because of lower vaccination rates.
