The generation gap at work, Gen Z struggles to work with older colleagues

A generation gap is sharper than ever in the workplace, according to a latest report, as Generation Z struggles to engage with their older colleagues. The fact that Generation Z, those under the age of 26, will make up 27% of the global workforce by 2025 has raised many concerns about how the new generation will fit into the workplace.

In fact, a new report found that some of these concerns may turn out to be true. Generation Z and Millennials—those born between 1981 and 1996—reported low productivity more than any other generation in the workplace, at 37 and 30 percent, respectively. This was compared to just 22 and 14 per cent of Generation X – those born between the mid-1960s and 1980s, and Baby Boomers – born between 1946 and 1964.

However, there was one key factor in the report that contributed to an employee being more likely to report low productivity and it had to do with the age of the people they worked with. Overall, workers with a large age gap with their employers reported significantly worse productivity, with those who had managers with an age gap of 12 years or more 1.5 times more likely to report low productivity.

The study was based on responses from nearly 1,500 workers in the United States and the United Kingdom. However, not everyone believes that this generation alone is fully responsible for what is happening. The report merely highlights a problem, but not the cause, of the dysfunction seen in many workplaces. However, the situation is about changing attitudes towards work, the development of technologies and different communication styles.
