A necklace believed to be linked to a scandal that precipitated the downfall of French queen Marie Antoinette has been sold at auction, according to the BBC.

The necklace, which has about 500 diamonds, was bought for $4.81 million, almost double the amount estimated by Sotheby's auction house.

The last queen of France was executed on the guillotine in 1793 at the age of 37, along with her husband, at the height of the French Revolution.

It is believed that some of the jewels in the necklace sold on Wednesday were the original ones at the "center of the diamond necklace case" in the 1780s, which may have hastened Marie Antoinette's death.

Jeanne de la Motte, a noblewoman who fell from the meal, pretended to be a French queen and tricked a cardinal into giving her the necklace without paying anything.

When Marie Antoinette, who had no knowledge of the transaction, was contacted about the lack of final payment, the cardinal was arrested but pleaded not guilty.

La Motte was found and a V ("voleuse" - "thief") mark was made on his body with a hot iron.

Although Marie Antoinette was found to be innocent, her reputation is thought to have been damaged by the affair and she was unpopular with the French people, who accused her of being spendthrift, a dangerous influence even on the king.
