A British law student, 23-year-old Mia O'Brien , has been sentenced to 25 years in prison in Dubai after being caught with 50 grams of cocaine in her apartment in October last year.

She is currently in the infamous Al-Awir prison, also known as the "Alcatraz of the Gulf".

Convicted on July 25 after a speedy trial in Arabic that lasted just one day, Mia is now in a filthy cell, which she shares with six other women, sleeping on a mattress on the floor.

Her mother, Danielle McKenna, has spoken out publicly, stating that it is a serious miscarriage of justice and that her daughter has "never touched drugs in her life."

"She made a big mistake when she went to visit a friend and her boyfriend in Dubai. She was shocked, crying on the phone and saying to me: 'Mom, I'm sorry...'" her mother recounts painfully.

But as Mia's family seeks forgiveness or a commutation of sentence, three key questions remain unanswered about the case.

Mia wasn't alone when she was arrested. According to reports, she was detained along with a friend and her boyfriend, and all three were charged with drug dealing.

But so far, no information has been made public about the other two people. Her mother confirms that "others are involved," but it is not known whether they have been released, convicted, or are still in Dubai.

Although the arrest occurred in October 2024, and the sentence was handed down in July 2025, Mia's case only became publicly known in recent days, when her mother launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe.

The family had chosen not to make the matter public, due to the shock and difficulty of coping. But the campaign was abruptly closed by GoFundMe, with the explanation that it violated the site's rules.

"Collecting funds for legal defense of certain suspected crimes is not allowed," a spokesperson for the platform stated.

Before it closed, the campaign had raised around £700 out of the £1,600 sought.

Responsibility for the 50 grams of cocaine – a quantity considered “huge” according to Mia’s mother – remains unclear. The narcotic was found in a “single piece” in the apartment where she was staying in Dubai.

The prosecution charged the 23-year-old with intent to sell, but Mia pleaded not guilty. The court also fined her a staggering £100,000.

The mother says her daughter would never have used or sold drugs, and strongly believes she is the victim of a great injustice:

"I don't believe for a moment that she would sell the drugs or bring them into the UK. It was a large amount, but others were involved. She was simply caught in the middle of a situation she didn't understand."

Mia O'Brien had dreams of becoming a lawyer, but now she is behind bars in harsh conditions, facing a long sentence and great uncertainty about the future.

The family hopes that the case will be reconsidered and that their daughter will have a chance for justice, while also seeking the intervention of British authorities.
