"Suleiman the Magnificent" sentenced to several years in prison,

An Istanbul court has sentenced renowned actors Halit Ergenç and Rıza Kocaoğlu to two years in prison each after they were found guilty of perjury during a trial related to the 2013 Gezi Park protest events.

Halit Ergenç, internationally known for his role as "Suleiman the Magnificent", and Rıza Kocaoğlu, a consolidated name in Turkish cinema, were called as witnesses in a case against Ayse Barim, a famous artist manager, accused of involvement in attempts to overthrow the constitutional order.

According to the indictment, their testimony was inaccurate and intentional to obstruct justice, by denying any connection to Barim's activities or by concealing information important to the investigation.

Who is Ayse Barim and why is she accused?
Barim is an influential name in the entertainment industry in Turkey, who has been in detention since January 2025 on charges of plotting to overthrow the government.

According to prosecutors, she had connections to key figures of the Gezi Park protests such as Osman Kavala and Mehmet Ali Alabora, the latter of whom is said to have fled the country to avoid prosecution.

The court filing states that Barim had publicly encouraged the actors he managed to support the protests, turning the case into a symbol of freedom of expression and civil resistance in Turkey.

The defendants' lawyers have called the decision "unfair and politically motivated," and have announced that they will appeal.

Human rights organizations have raised the alarm, warning of a dangerous climate where public figures are being punished for their support for the right to protest.

What happened in Gezi Park? One of the largest protests in modern Turkish history
In May 2013, a group of activists gathered to oppose the construction of a shopping mall in Gezi Park, one of Istanbul's green spaces. The peaceful protest escalated when police intervened violently, sparking massive reactions across the country.

Protests spread to more than 70 cities, while clashes with police left at least 11 dead and thousands injured.

The government called the protests an attempt at destabilization, while for many citizens they remained a symbol of freedom of speech and resistance to authoritarianism.
