Many men dream of a thick, well-groomed beard, but not everyone achieves it. While some men can go without shaving for a few days to fully develop their beard, others struggle with gaps, thin hairs, or a complete lack of growth.

But what are the real reasons why this happens?

1. Genetics – the main factor

It may seem unfair, but genes play a major role. If your father or grandfather didn't have a full beard, it's very possible that you will have the same growth pattern. The number of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) receptors in your hair follicles determines how thick your beard will be.

2. Hormones – testosterone and DHT levels

Testosterone and its derivative DHT are hormones that directly affect facial hair growth. Low levels of these hormones or low receptor sensitivity to these hormones can cause a beard to not develop fully.

3. Poor blood circulation in the face

Follicles need oxygen and nutrients that come through the blood. If circulation is poor – due to stress, lack of physical activity or smoking – this affects beard growth.

4. Lack of vitamins and nutrients

Vitamins like B7 (biotin), B12, D, zinc, and iron help strengthen hair follicles. A deficiency in these can slow or stop beard growth.

5. Stress and lifestyle

Chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which inhibits testosterone production and normal blood circulation. Insufficient sleep and poor diet also directly affect the appearance of the beard.

6. Illnesses or medical conditions

Some hormonal disorders, such as hypogonadism, or autoimmune diseases that damage follicles, may be the reason why the beard does not grow at all.
