Aloe vera, which is mainly used for medicinal purposes, is part of the carcinogenic category after studies on mice.

As the study showed, rodents who drank water mixed with aloe leaves were more likely to develop colon cancer.

"This is a study that has been making noise since 2016 when it was published but was never taken into consideration by the WHO," says endocrinologist Leonidas Doundas.

Experts recommend not to panic as there is not enough evidence to prevent the use of this product.

"The study of aspartame (an artificial sweetener declared carcinogenic by the WHO) was done in humans, the study of aloe was done in rats."

"There are about 538 studies that show that aloe vera has healing properties and there is only one study that shows that it causes cancer," say the researchers.

Aloe vera began to be used as a treatment for burns in the 1930s and today cosmetic companies include it in soaps, sunscreens or shampoos.

"It's not a simple extract that we can take without a doctor's prescription, and the side effects are more common than the possibility that it's related to cancer."

As scientists explain, the benefits of aloe vera are numerous if consumed in moderation. Aloe vera helps with skin diseases and infections, but its abuse has serious side effects.

"Aloe gel is therapeutic, while green skin is dangerous," says Chryssa Sardeli, doctor.

"Aloe is a medicinal plant when the part used is the gel it contains and not the skin. The skin is dangerous to health, should not be eaten or boiled and can cause kidney failure and even death."

"The bark contains a class of substances that are carcinogenic," she says, adding that the WHO has included aloe vera as a Group 2B substance, which means no restrictions are recommended, it just indicates that there is evidence that the product has some carcinogenic effects.
