Scientists are exploring the idea that bees could serve as a model for developing a universal language for communicating with extraterrestrial civilizations. A new study suggests that, although human and bee brains are very different, both species are capable of performing mathematical operations.

Bees use the “waggle” dance to communicate the location and quality of food sources, while humans developed language. This shows that, even for very different species, sophisticated ways of communication and cooperation exist.

Recent experiments have shown that bees can learn addition and subtraction, categorize quantities as odd or even, order objects, and even understand the concept of “zero.” They can even associate symbols with numbers, a way similar to how humans learn to write numbers.

This ability suggests that mathematics could be the basis of a universal language, understandable by a wide variety of intelligent species, potentially including extraterrestrial life. If this hypothesis is confirmed, we could use mathematics as a “bridge” to communicate with civilizations on the most distant stars.

This discovery not only appreciates the ingenuity of bees, but also opens the discussion on the question of whether mathematics is an exclusively human creation or a universal consequence of intelligence.
