Matteo Messina Denaro has died at the age of 61. The boss of 'Cosa Nostra', arrested on January 16 after 30 years on the run, died in the L'Aquila hospital where he had been in an armored room since August. He had been suffering from colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma, a form of colon cancer, for some time.

The boss of the Italian mafia was admitted to the prisoner ward of the L'Aquila hospital, where he ended up in an irreversible coma. According to Italian media reports, doctors had stopped feeding him after his condition worsened on Thursday due to bleeding with his vital parameters impaired.

The boss of 'Cosa nostra' was arrested in January this year after a raid on a private clinic in Palermo. Messina Denaro continued to undergo oncology treatments under the false name Andrea Bonafede, the Bonafede family surveyor who had acted as his figurehead.

Thanks to the combination of some information from the medical files and the long investigations carried out by the police, he was identified as a patient of the private medical facility La Maddalena and was arrested shortly before a visit to the clinic. After the arrest on January 16, Messina Denaro was subjected to the regime special detention center in L'Aquila.

The boss of Cosa Nostra was sentenced to life in prison as an instigator of the 1992 massacres. For years Messina Denaro lived as a fugitive in Sicily and then, perhaps because of his illness, he was identified by the authorities, who for a long time worked to attack the network of supporters who allowed the fugitive to continue to hide for years.

After several months of investigation, the authorities managed to arrest him in the raid carried out near the clinic at the end of January./abcnews.al
