Bears, wolves and bison are making a comeback across Europe, after being threatened with extinction. The animals are among 50 species that are increasing in numbers on the European continent, according to the new European Wildlife Recovery report.

From turtles to humpback whales and wolves, many species are making 'spectacular' recoveries, study finds .

Which species are recovering in Europe?

The "Wildlife Recovery 2022" report does not cover the biodiversity crisis. Many European wildlife remains under threat. Almost one in eight birds and about one in five mammals are still at risk of extinction on the continent.

Meanwhile, wolves are one of the most iconic populations experiencing a 'resurgence'.

Gray wolves roam the continent. But they almost disappeared in the 20th century, after people encroached on their habitats and hunted them. Since the 1970s, the population has grown by 1,800 percent to 17,000.

The brown bear is another carnivore making a comeback thanks to these efforts. Since 1960, the population has increased by 44 percent.

Meanwhile, the population of European bison has increased by 399 percent since 1971. The large herbivore – one of the world's few surviving animals – is an important species, helping to maintain partially forested landscapes by eating large amounts of large bushes.

Most of these triumphant recoveries are thanks to hunting bans, dedicated breeding efforts and habitat restoration.
