Trump: I will meet with Putin only if he meets with Zelensky
US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump will meet with Vladimir Putin next week only if the Russian president agrees to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky, according to reports.

"Putin needs to meet with Zelensky for the meeting to happen," a White House official told the New York Post. "A place has not been assigned yet."

This comes after the Kremlin confirmed earlier today that Trump and Putin will sit down in the "coming days", as the Russian president suggested the United Arab Emirates as a possible country.

But Putin also downplayed the possibility of direct talks with Zelenski, saying that a meeting can only take place after "certain conditions" are met.

"I have nothing against this in general, it is possible, but certain conditions must be created for this. But unfortunately, we are still far from creating such conditions," he told reporters in the Kremlin.

Ben Wallace, Britain's former defense secretary, previously said Britain must also be involved in the talks, otherwise Zelensky could be "forced" to accept a peace deal.
