Surrounded by numerous American flags, former President Donald Trump gave a campaign-style speech to a crowd of supporters at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida on Tuesday evening.

Trump took a defiant stance, citing, among other things, the two failed impeachment trials in Congress while he was president. He called the indictment filed against him in New York as the latest in "attacks with fraudulent investigations".

Kryetari i Dhomës së Përfaqësuesve, republikani Kevin McCarthy, tha se ngritja e aktakuzës tregon se, “sistemi ynë i shenjtë i drejtësi u përdor politikisht” kundër zotit Trump. Përmes një shkrimi në rrjetitn Twitter, guvernatori DeSantis thotë se ngritja e aktakuzës ishte joamerikane.

"The political use of our justice system to advance a political agenda turns law enforcement upside down. The Manhattan District Attorney, backed by Soros, has repeatedly bent the law while letting criminals go free. However, now he is bending the law to target a political opponent", says Mr. DeSantis, among other things.

Reactions from elected Democratic officials to the indictment of Mr. Trump have been few and far between, including President Joe Biden.

"The defendant, Donald J. Trump, falsified business records in New York to conceal an illegal attempt to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election, as well as other violations of election laws," said Assistant District Attorney Christopher Conroy.

For the first time in history, a former president of the United States of America has appeared in court as a defendant under criminal charges. Prosecutors say Mr. Trump tried to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election by trying to block news that could damage his candidacy and then concealing the true nature of the payments to buy silence.

The criminal charges stem from three separate cases in which the former president and his associates are accused of making payments to buy the silence of three individuals during his 2016 presidential campaign.

The payments, the indictment says, were made to buy the silence of two women who claim they had intimate relations with Mr. Trump years ago, and a payment to buy the silence of a Trump Tower employee who alleged that Mr. Trump had a child in an illegitimate relationship.

Mr. Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records. Earlier on Tuesday he turned himself in to authorities in New York and pleaded not guilty to all charges. Republican Trump has portrayed the New York case and three separate investigations by the Justice Department and prosecutors in Georgia as politically motivated.

Prosecutor Alvin Bragg was asked during a press conference why he had filed the lawsuit now and if the timing was politically motivated. The district attorney said his office had "additional evidence" that his predecessor did not have. "I file a lawsuit when they are ready," he said.

The judge did not order the case to be kept from public discussion, but warned Mr Trump to avoid comments that could incite civil unrest. If convicted of any of the 34 felony charges, Mr. Trump could face a maximum of four years in prison, but is likely to receive less.

The judge set the next hearing for December 4. Mr. Trump's lawyers asked that he be excused from attending the hearing in person because of the extraordinary security required.

Prosecutors had asked for the trial to be set for January, weeks before the Republican primaries for the 2024 presidential election. Mr. Trump's lawyers had asked for the trial to be postponed until the spring. The judge has not yet set a date, according to reports up to the time of publication of the article.
