Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called for Israel to be banned from international sporting events as the war in Gaza continues.

"Why was Russia expelled after invading Ukraine, but Israel is allowed to stay after invading Gaza?" the Spanish prime minister asked during a meeting of Socialist Party lawmakers in the Spanish parliament.

"While the barbarity continues, Israel cannot use international events to purge its presence," he added.

Sanchez, as Politico reports, insisted that he "always rejects violence" and that he has "deep admiration and respect for our athletes." However, he added, "we also have great respect and deep admiration for Spanish society that mobilizes against injustice and defends its ideals peacefully."

The Spanish prime minister's statement came amid escalating diplomatic tensions with Israel.

Sanchez also expressed his support for pro-Palestinian protesters who protested against the participation of an Israeli team in the Vuelta a Espana cycling race.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar immediately accused Sanchez and his government of inciting the mob and spoke of a shameful act. He called the prime minister and his government "communists, anti-Semites and enemies of the truth."

For his part, opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijo said the government had risked "the lives of police officers and the safety of cyclists" by supporting the protesters.

Sanchez's comments also coincide with a broader debate over whether Israel should be allowed to participate in cultural events like the Eurovision Song Contest.

Spain's Culture Minister, Ernesto Urtasun, said on Monday that the country's public broadcaster should follow the example of Ireland and the Netherlands and boycott the event in 2026 if Israel is allowed to participate.
