US conducts airstrikes against ISIS in northwest Nigeria

United States President Donald Trump announced that American forces have carried out a “powerful and deadly strike” against elements of the ISIS terrorist organization in northwestern Nigeria. In a post on the social network Truth, Trump wrote that the operation was carried out on his orders and targeted ISIS militants, who, according to him, “have been brutally targeting and killing, mostly innocent Christians.”

According to the US president, the Pentagon carried out "multiple precision strikes", while Nigerian authorities confirmed that these were coordinated airstrikes against terrorist targets. "Under my leadership, our country will not allow radical Islamic terrorism to flourish," Trump wrote, adding a Christmas message and stressing that operations will continue if violence against civilians does not stop.

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced that the strike was conducted at the request of Nigerian authorities and targeted ISIS elements in Sokoto state, resulting in the killing of several militants. In a post on the X platform, AFRICOM said that these actions “demonstrate the strength of the US military and its commitment to eliminating terrorist threats to Americans, both at home and abroad.”

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also reacted, noting that the president had previously warned that violence against Christians in Nigeria “must end.” He added that the Department of Defense is always ready to act and expressed gratitude for the cooperation of the Nigerian government. For its part, the Nigerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the United States carried out “precision airstrikes against terrorist targets” in the northwest of the country. In an official statement, it stressed that the Nigerian authorities remain committed to structured security cooperation with international partners, including the US, to confront the ongoing threat of terrorism and violent extremism.
