Republican Senator: We told Maduro to leave the country! He can go to Russia,

Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin said the Trump administration gave Venezuela's authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro "the chance to leave" the country, as US pressure continues to escalate.

"We told him he could go to Russia or some other country," Mullin said on CNN's "State of the Union." "The Venezuelan people have spoken and expressed their desire for a new leader," Mullin added, referring to last year's election in which the regime claimed victory despite failing to provide supporting documentation.

"President Trump's determined commitment to ending this madness in Venezuela will save countless American lives and give the beloved Venezuelan people a new chance," Mullin added. "I've heard that Turkey and Iran are nice places to visit this time of year," he said.

Various reports have indicated that Trump urged Maduro to relinquish power to avoid being forcibly removed in a recent phone call. There, as detailed by the media, Trump stressed that Maduro should step down along with senior regime officials, likely including Diosdado Cabello, Jorge and Delcy Rodriguez, and Vladimir Padrino Lopez.

A few hours after the call, the administration officially declared the Cartel de los Soles, which the administration accuses Maduro and his top officials of leading, a terrorist organization, paving the way for attacks inside Venezuela.

The White House also dismissed the idea that the conversation included a possible meeting, as The New York Times had reported the day before. And on Saturday, Trump said that Venezuelan airspace should be considered "closed."
