A day before Germans go to the polls in the European Parliament elections, Chancellor Olaf Scholz reconfirmed his support for war-torn Ukraine.
"Russia will not escape from its imperialist plans," the Social Democratic Chancellor (SPD) said in his weekly video message.
"Putin must understand that he cannot win his brutal campaign. That there can only be a just peace for Ukraine," Scholz said.
Polls ahead of Sunday's vote show the SPD with around 15% of the vote – roughly the same as that of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).
If the SPD were to lose, it would strengthen the AfD's status as the second most popular party in Germany, behind the conservative CDU/CSU.
Ahead of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy, which opens this Thursday, and the Swiss peace conference for Ukraine that starts on June 15, Scholz stressed the importance of continued coordination with partners and allies.
He said he would promote a common stance towards Russia with representatives from Asia, Africa and South America at the Swiss conference.
"It is important for countries to abide by international law and the Charter of the United Nations," Scholz said.
"And that is why Russia must end its invasion war," he added.
Amid concerns in Germany about Russia's expanding war in Ukraine to other parts of Europe, Scholz said German support for Ukraine was not jeopardising peace in Germany.
