Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin and thanked him for assuring him that Russia would provide enough gas to Serbia this winter.

Serbia was caught by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, fully dependent on Russian gas.

Meanwhile, following the example of many European Union (EU) countries, Serbia has also begun to work on finding other sources of gas supply.

However, despite calls from the EU, the club it intends to join, Serbia is refusing to impose sanctions on Russia and representatives of authorities in Belgrade continue to maintain ties with the Kremlin.

Vucic announced on his Instagram account on Sunday that he had not spoken with Putin for nearly two and a half years and that on October 20 they had a "good, open, long and meaningful conversation."

"I expressed the hope, as two and a half years ago, that Serbia will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation," Vucic said.

He said in an Instagram video that he also discussed bilateral, economic and political issues with Putin.

Russia is Serbia's biggest supporter in opposing Kosovo's independence, which Pristina declared in 2008.

Meanwhile, the conversation took place as Russia awaits official response from Serbia to Putin's invitation in September for Vucic to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan, scheduled to be held from October 22 to 24.
