From today, 1 January 2025, all Russian gas supplies through Ukraine to Europe are stopped. The russian energy company Gazprom announced the statement after the failure of the previous agreement with Kiev that was signed in 2019 and expired at midnight.

"Russian gas supply through Ukraine was cut off at 8 a.m. Moscow time," Gazprom said on Monday, blaming the kyiv government, which had long declared its intention not to renew the pact after the Russian invasion and war.

The agreement with The Ukrainian company Naftogaz envisaged the transit of 40 billion cubic meters of Russian gas annually through Ukraine.

"Since Kiev has repeatedly and clearly refused to extend agreements in this regard, we have today lost the technical and legal ability to transit gas through Ukraine," Gazprom explained.

Europe, for its part, says it is ready to support this lack of flows through other alternative routes.

"The impact on the EU's security of supply will be limited," a European Commission spokeswoman stressed, explaining that European infrastructure is flexible enough to guarantee non-Russian gas supplies. The lack of Russian gas supplies, however, has already caused concern in some countries like Slovakia, under which the cost to the European Union could reach 120 billion euros in 2025-2026 due to higher gas prices.
