Emmanuel Macron's government has survived a motion of no confidence in the National Assembly meeting on Monday. Macron's government was forced to a vote of confidence after the Lower House passed a bill to change the country's pension system.

The move, which followed weeks of protests against the pension overhaul, sparked three nights of riots and demonstrations in Paris and across the country, reminiscent of the Yellow Vest protests that erupted in late 2018 over high fuel prices.

The motion of no confidence initiated by a small group of the center and supported by a coalition of the left received 278 votes, of the 287 needed in total to pass.

Another motion for the initiative is expected to receive less support from other groups of French lawmakers. If both motions fail, the bill will be deemed passed.

We recall that President Emmanuel Macron ordered the use of special constitutional powers to pass the draft law that increases the retirement age from 62 to 64, without giving lawmakers the opportunity to vote on it.

A broad alliance of France's main unions has said it will continue to mobilize to try to force a reversal of the changes. A nationwide day of industrial action is planned for Thursday.
