The European Parliament has approved on Wednesday the resolution for the new expansion strategy of the European Union.

This resolution was drafted by the Croatian MP, Tonino Piculla.

This resolution proposes dramatic changes in the EU's approach to enlargement.

It is proposed to abandon consensus voting and make decisions by qualified majority.

In it, it is also required that 2030 be the deadline for concluding membership negotiations and it is mentioned that the enlargement process has no alternative.

"To strengthen the capacities of the EU to act, by reforming the decision-making process, including the qualified majority format in the fields relevant to the enlargement process", the resolution mentions.

Among other things, the resolution mentions that the credibility of the enlargement process, and of the entire EU, has been damaged on occasions as some member countries have used their national interests to block the enlargement process.

This, according to the report, "has created space for the expansion of the influence of Russia, China and other harmful factors in the region".

As for the Balkans, the resolution mentions that the Parliament's approach to this region should focus on the adaptation of these countries to the positions of the EU in the field of foreign policy and security.

In this regard, the imposition of sanctions against Russia is mentioned as a condition for the continuation of Serbia's negotiations for membership in the European bloc.

"Negotiations with Serbia should continue only if this country adapts to EU sanctions against Russia and makes significant EU-related reforms."

In addition to sanctions, the resolution also mentions that financial aid to Serbia be conditional.

The resolution also mentions the need for progress in the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia towards a comprehensive agreement, so that both countries advance on the road to the EU.

According to the resolution, the European Parliament is asked to punish the fulfillment of the criteria, while the lack of progress from the candidate countries is punished./REL
