Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban promised to strengthen legal protections for children during a speech on Saturday after a scandal led to the resignation of some of his key allies and sent tens of thousands of people onto the streets of Budapest in protests on Friday.

In a speech to his supporters, Orban sought to defuse the controversy over President Katalin Novak's pardon of the sexual abuse case, which sparked a public outcry and led to her resignation, which could damage the ruling party's core appeal:  her commitment to family and Christian values .

Orban said Novak and former justice minister Judit Varga, who signed the pardon, were right to resign and said the government would review and strengthen child protection and introduce a law. Friday's protest was the largest rally against Orbán's government in years.

Regarding NATO, the prime minister said that Hungary could ratify Sweden's membership at the beginning of its spring session, which will begin on February 26.

Hungary is the only NATO member that has yet to ratify Sweden's request to join the alliance, which it submitted after Russia's full invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A long-time supporter of former US President Donald Trump, Orban said he would like to see him back in office after the November 5 US election.
