Parisians voted in a referendum on Sunday in favor of subjecting SUV owners to a three-fold hike in parking fees as the French capital presses ahead with long-term plans to become a fully cycle-friendly city.
About 54.5% of Parisians voted in favor of the measure, while 45.5% opposed it. Only 5.7% of citizens participated in the referendum called by the municipality, according to the official results.
Sunday's referendum, which came less than a year after city residents voted last year to ban e-scooters, aims to triple parking fees for cars weighing 1.6 tonnes and over to €18 an hour, to discourage the use of large and polluting vehicles. The new fee will also apply to electric cars of 2 tons and more.
Under Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo, Paris' streets have been transformed, with 84km of cycle lanes created since 2020 and a 71% increase in bike use between the end of the COVID-19 lockdown and 2023, according to the figures of the municipality. However, the changes have angered motorists.
Driving lobby 40 Million Motorists launched a petition to support drivers' freedom to use whatever vehicle they want. SUVs have become increasingly popular in France, particularly with families.
