After "Sky ECC" "Ghost" breaks down, hundreds of people end

The encrypted communication platform "Ghost" has been dismantled by law enforcement authorities, under suspicion that it was used for criminal activity.

Hundreds of people have reportedly been arrested in an operation stretching from Europe to Australia.

Authorities made their move on Tuesday and Wednesday, arresting crime figures in Italy, Ireland, Sweden, Canada and Australia, including the 32-year-old "owner" of the app.

Europol executive director Catherine De Bolle said law enforcement from nine countries were involved in the international attack.

"Today we have made it clear that no matter what hidden criminal networks think they are, they cannot escape our collective efforts," she said.

The Ghost app, a kind of WhatsApp for criminals, was created nine years ago and could only be accessed through modified smartphones that sold for around US$1,590.

French police tracked down the creator's location in Australia and joined forces with local police to target the platform.

"A press conference will be held on Wednesday 18 September 2024 to announce a major action against an encrypted communication platform used for criminal activities, such as large-scale drug trafficking, murder and money laundering.
This operation is the latest sophisticated effort to date to disrupt the activities of high-risk criminal organizations operating from all four corners of the world," Europol said.

At the press conference there are expected to be representatives from Europol, the French National Gendarmerie, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Irish An Garda Síochána, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The countries and organizations involved in the operation are Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United States of America, Europol and Eurojust.
