The Turkish Parliament debates Sweden's admission to NATO!

The Turkish parliament on December 26 is expected to resume the debate on the approval of Sweden's application for NATO membership, a topic that has become more complicated after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan linked the issue to Ankara's request for F-16 aircraft from the United States.

Sweden and Finland renounced their military neutrality and applied to join the western NATO alliance after Russia invaded Ukraine last year.

Finland was admitted to NATO in April, but for 19 months Sweden is still waiting for the approval of Turkey and Hungary, as the approval of 31 member states is required to join the alliance.

In November, the Turkish Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee failed to reach agreement on the text of the agreement, and the matter was brought up for discussion again on the afternoon of December 26.

In July, Erdogan dropped objections to Sweden's NATO membership after Stockholm cracked down on Kurdish groups that Ankara considers terrorist groups.

"We see that there is a change of politics in Sweden. We see that decisions are being made in the courts," said Fuat Oktay, a lawmaker from Erdogan's ruling AKP party, which is part of the Turkish Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee.

After the issue is approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee, the vote is taken to Parliament, where Erdogan's alliance has a majority.

NATO allies have pressured Turkey to ratify Sweden's accession to NATO, while France has said the alliance's credibility "is in question."
