South Korea's parliament has voted to impeach the country's president, Yoon Suk-yeol, by suspending him from official duties for declaring martial law. The National Assembly voted 204 to 85 to impeach Yoon, the second such vote in eight days. Three members abstained and eight votes were declared invalid.
Immediately afterwards, large crowds of people gathered in the main squares, celebrating and expressing joy over this decision. Some with tears in their eyes and some singing.
With his dismissal, Yoon is automatically suspended from office, and South Korea's Constitutional Court has six months to decide what happens to Yoon. If he is not reinstated, elections for a new president must be held within 60 days. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will take office as interim president.
He has been banned from leaving South Korea, while law enforcement authorities are conducting investigations into whether Yoon and other individuals involved in declaring martial law abused their power or committed other crimes.
