Experts' apocalyptic predictions: An earthquake will also destroy the city

Reports of devastating earthquakes in Syria and Turkey caused great shock in Iran as well.

Turkey is one of the few countries in the world that allows citizens of the Islamic Republic visa-free entry, and about half a million Iranians have permanent residence there. People in Iran know very well what earthquake disaster means.

This country, like Turkey, is located at the intersection of a number of large tectonic plates, which makes it one of the most endangered countries in the world. And fears are now growing with experts warning in Iranian state media about the potential impact of such a disaster in the future.

They talk, among other things, about apocalyptic scenes in the Iranian capital with a high density of constructions and over 15 million inhabitants. Experts regret that not enough lessons have been learned from the past and building regulations are often not properly implemented.

"In Iran, just like in Turkey, there are very modern and advanced earthquake safety norms - at least on paper," Hamid Sadegh-Azar, professor of structural analysis and dynamics at the University of Kaiserslautern in southwestern Germany, tells DW.

In the last 60 years, Iran has experienced three powerful earthquakes with a very high death toll: the 1962 Buin Zahra earthquake killed 13,000, the 1990 Manjil-Rudbar earthquake killed
