Former US President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay the New York Times about $400,000 in legal fees for a failed lawsuit.

More specifically, it will pay $392,638. Trump's $100 million lawsuit accused the newspaper and Trump's estranged niece, Mary Trump, of "an insidious conspiracy" to obtain his tax records.

The lawsuit, over a 2018 investigation that alleged the former president was involved in "dubious tax schemes," accused three journalists who reported on Trump's granddaughter's work history as part of a "personal vendetta" against him. She claimed that they followed her relentlessly and convinced her to hand over the documents.

The series of articles on Trump's financial affairs won a Pulitzer Prize. On Friday, New York Supreme Court Justice Robert Reed ordered Mr Trump to reimburse The New York Times for fees incurred by his failed legal action.

Judge Reed dismissed the case in May, saying the legal system has long recognized that journalists have the right to engage in legal and ordinary news-gathering activities./ New York Times
