The refusal of some young immigrant women in Europe to submit and be forced into marriage sometimes cost them their lives. This is a very present phenomenon among the Pakistani community in Italy. In two court cases, Italian prosecutors are seeking justice for Pakistani immigrant women who were allegedly killed by their own relatives for refusing to marry the men the family chose.

The numerous cases have fueled growing voices calling for greater justice and protection for immigrant women, who live between old family traditions and Western ways of life.

A few minutes after the birth, the parents of Pakistani Iram Aslam engaged her to a cousin, who was born 17 days before her.

But Ms. Aslam, who immigrated to Italy as a teenager, saw her cousin as a brother.

During a visit to her hometown, she had told her aunts that she was not ready for marriage.

"They tried to convince me to marry him," says the 29-year-old.

"I don't want to marry him, please don't ask me anymore", she reacted after the insistence of the family.

Her relatives in Italy and Pakistan continued to insist that she should marry a man of their choice. They proposed to her about 30 potential partners. Mrs. Aslami rejected them all.

"They got angry and now no one talks to me," she says.

"I wanted someone else. But they did not agree, because in our community love does not exist. Love is seen as a sin," says Mrs. Aslami.

She asked that her face not be shown because she feels intimidated by her Pakistani neighbors in Guastella, Italy, a town of 15,000 that is dominated by immigrants from her own community.

"They don't let you live, they kill you. Whenever they saw me on the street, they called my brother. They didn't understand that I came home late from school. Every night I had problems with my brother. "Once, he pulled out my hair because he wanted to check my cell phone," she confesses.

Familja i mohon akuzat.

"There are girls who are not allowed to go to school, if they go to the library their books are torn. Violence is not only physical, we should not only look for signs of violence. We must listen to the victims", says activist Tiziana Dal Pra.

In December, a court in the city of Brescia sentenced three Pakistani immigrants - the parents and older brother of the four girls - to five years in prison on charges of beating them and denying them their education.

According to court documents, the parents threatened their daughters that if they refused the marriages they would end up like "that girl in Pakistan".

The court said the threat referred to 25-year-old Sana Cheema, who was killed after returning from Italy to Pakistan in 2018, forced by her parents./VOA
